But I figured, what the hell - this must be where we were going because this was where we were.

A few more weeks to go. Poland, Latvia, Estonia, Belarus (briefly), and finally back to Czech.

2 days in Serbia at a camp with students and refugees from all over Yugoslavia that the Serbian government houses and feeds.

It was sunny one moment, then it dropped about 30 degrees and began to hail.

This is Milosh. He has a tremendous knowledge of independent films and is moving to Sweden to study film. Really brilliant guy and very kind. I hope he becomes a director. Here he is with my Hasselblad.

And my bed for a few days:

Serbia was really hurt by the war in the late 90’s. I have loved being there each chance I’ve had to visit, but I’m heartbroken by the state it is in. There are beautiful parts, to be sure. We were in the middle of the country between Nis and Belgrade.

The kids at the camp were fantastic and seemed to be having a great time. They have great leaders who really care about them.

Homesickness set in today while walking around Prague. I’ve been here maybe 6 or 7 times, and it’s still as beautiful, but I would give anything right now to stare at the Space Needle from a caffé.

We stayed near a Bosnian refugee camp for a few days. I pointed to my camera and then pointed to her. She smiled a toothless smile and nodded her head.

Rijeka, Croatia

Spent 4 days in Rijeka, Croatia. I heard that Rick Steves said that Rijeka is one of the worst towns to visit in Croatia. I disagree. Stayed with Stevo and Sarah for two nights and at a hostel for another two nights.

As introverted as I am, I’ve begun to break out of my shell and do the unthinkable: Ask complete strangers if I can take their photograph. Above are Dragon, Oscar from Finland, and Deena.

There were a few guys from L.A. at the camp we were at who were teaching the kids how to breakdance. When they asked if I wanted to try, I mumbled something like No, er, see I’ve got this camera here. In my hands. Right now. It’d be awkward. I’d be awkward. Where’s the bathroom?

This is Stevo and Sarah’s house, where I had a very comfortable matress on the floor and great coffee in the morning.

Great few days there, but then right back on the road.

No photographer can avoid these shots. Cliché ’til I die.
